Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club was founded in 1888 and expanded to the full 18 holes in the early 1930's. The course, which is set on a peninsula jutting out into the Moray Firth, required the ingenuity of the famous course designer, James Braid to squeeze the 18 holes into the limited space available.
This is a tough course with a unique character and charm found in few other links courses. The course is surrounded on three sides by beach and water. The course measures 5890 yards, but what it lacks in distance is more than made up by the fast greens, tight fairways and strategically placed bunkers throughout the course - the speciality of the all time master of bunkering, James Braid. This is a simply stunning setting and there are magnificent views from every tee, fairway and green - a truly outstanding setting.
As with any Scottish links golf course, there are some outstanding holes. The 4th (the signature hole), which measures 455 yards, may not appear to merit it's par-5 rating, but the hole is considered to be one of the most challenging in the North of Scotland. The Moray Firth is well known for the blue-nosed Dolphins that reside here, and one of the best viewing points is around the lighthouse on the 4th. The locals say that they often put on a special performance just for the visiting golfers!
